  • The Outotec Advanced Staged Gasifier (FBSG) is based on over 40 years of experience and more than 100 energy system installations using their bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology.  Its reliable and well-tested design has been improved with design elements from the Outotec BFB gasifier to offer the best features of both technologies.

    Gasification has become one of the preferred methods of energy recovery from a variety of fuels, including biomass and waste.  Biomass gasification is a process of converting the feedstock, typically wood, paper agricultural residue or other waste products into a synthesis gas to be utilized as a fossil fuel replacement.

    With Outotec FBSG technology, the incoming biomass or waste material is converted first to a gaseous fuel mixture and finally to a thermally oxidized, hot gas stream comprised of water vapor, and carbon dioxide plus non-hazardous ash residue.  The thermal energy is recovered in a combination of heat transfer surfaces in the combustor and a custom designed waste heat boiler.  This is referred to as “close-coupled” gasification, because the gasification process is immediately followed by the combustion process in a single combustor.  In the conventional gasification process, the low energy gas or LBG, typically in the range of 150 - 250 Btu/ft3, is extracted and burned in a separate and independent boiler, gas turbine or reciprocating engine.

    This advanced staged gasification system combines the advantages of gasification and the high conversion efficiencies of fluidized bed into a single vessel.  This technology is ideally suited for gasification applications that involve steam production for power generation.  After the low Btu gas has been generated in the fluidized bed zone it is introduced into a steam recovery unit wherein additional air is provided to complete combustion of the constituents.  The air is introduced in multiple levels, or stages, whereby the temperature profile of the reactant gases can be better controlled to eliminate the formation of gaseous pollutants, such as NOx.  The design of the second stage oxidation unit provides for significant residence time, plus further mixing and enhanced turbulence in the gas stream at each stage of additional air injection resulting in reduced emissions.  The Outotec Advanced Staged Gasifier can utilize biofuels at 50% moisture content or more.

    Outotec supplied FBC systems have consistently been accepted as Best Available Control Technology (BACT) by state and federal environmental regulatory agencies.  FBSG technology has been permitted in non-attainment areas, has been selected for projects in Europe and is currently in operation in the U.S. in various locations.  The technology is qualified as “Advanced Biomass Conversion Technology” for renewable energy credits requirements in a number of states.

    Outotec fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology provides economic and environmental solutions for a wide range of waste management problems. Outotec FBC is the trusted and tested unit for thermal waste processing.

  • The development of Outotec’s FBC technologies was initially in response to the needs of the forest products and related industries.  Many of the basic design features of these technologies were developed to deal with the challenges of combusting wood and other wastes from these industries. This resulted in a simple design that addressed the specific requirements of these industries and their wastes.  As a consequence of this initial development, the basic Outotec FBC design is unique in the industry and most adaptable to the challenges of burning fuels with very different handling, preparation, feeding, combustion and emissions characteristics, especially the full range of biomass and waste fuels.

    The Outotec Fluidized Bed Thermal Oxidizer for waste fuels benefits from over 40 years experience and 100+ energy cases. This reliable and tested overall design has been improved by combining several design elements especially related to waste fuels. The Outotec Fluidized Bed Thermal Oxidizer utilizes Outotec’s proven and robust boiler design and gas cleaning equipment.

    The Outotec Fluidized Bed Thermal Oxidizer works reliably and with high efficiency with wide variety of waste fuels, however it is always designed to meet the Customer fuel specification. This tailoring takes into consideration for example fuel feed equipment, bed cleaning requirements or ash system dimensioning.
    Also e.g. the following options can be used to secure the operational reliability even with demanding fuels:

    -         Air preheating for high moisture and / or low heating value fuels

    -         In bed and vapor space heat transfer tubing for high heating value fuels

    -         Exhaust gas recirculation

    Over the years Outotec has optimized the design and therefore the following benefits are currently automatically part of every Outotec Fluidized Bed technology package solution:

    ·        Sulfur and other acid components largely neutralized already in the fluidized bed

    ·        Vapor space volume over the fluidized bed is designed to secure complete combustion and low emissions via multi stage secondary air injection

    ·        Optimized chemical feeding points for efficient NOx suppression with minimal chemical consumption

    ·        Multiclones between boiler and economizer section reduce ash load in the baghouse and minimize Dioxin “de novo synthesis” effect and minimize Dioxin emissions

    ·        Staged gas cleaning allows majority of the ash to be extracted as non-hazardous ash, reducing the operational costs

    ·        Semi-dry gas cleaning with reduced flue gas treatment chemical consumption and reduced stack plume risk

Our robust solutions allow high flexibility in fuel heat value, moisture, and ash content without sacrificing the energy output of the system.

    Depending on your needs and fuel characteristics, Outotec offers two bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) gasifier technologies. The Outotec BFB Gasifier produces low or medium calorific value gas that can be used in internal combustion engines or turbines, or further developed into liquid fuels.

    The open nozzle grid bottom design is resistant to the contaminants within fuel and allows particles up to 100 mm to be removed from the process hot zone, with zero impact on the unit's availability or production rate.

    Good emission control is established using state-of-the-art equipment and through process design. Low bed temperatures virtually eliminate the formation of thermal NOx contaminants, and the limestone feed to the bed eliminates most of the sulfur and other fuel-borne acid contaminants as soon as they are released from the fuel.

    The fluidized bed gasifiers, staged gasifiers, and combustor have several design benefits:
