  • OSIsoft PI System
    The PI System is a data infrastructure for collecting, storing, and organizing operational data from plants and processes. The PI System delivers data collected to users so they can analyze, visualize, and share it....

  • Specifically, utilities use OSIsoft’s over 450 PI Connectors and PI Interfaces to collect data from data sources like SCADA, DCS, PLC and other assets and sends that data to the PI Server. Users retrieve that data from the PI Server and display it using PI System visualization and reporting tools.

    • A basic PI System consists of a data source, a data collector for that source, a PI Server, and PI System tools on a PC or mobile device.
    • Data sources are the instruments that generate data including secondary sensors that utilities can add to enhance their existing instrumentation.
    • Asset Framework organizes data into categories such as assets by sites.
    • PI System tools retrieve data so people can analyze, view, and share it.

    The PI System collects large volumes of high-speed data in real time and stores the data for many years at the desired fidelity and rate. The PI System can collect data at sub-second speeds, organize data by assets and events, and deliver data to geographically dispersed users and systems.

    By aggregating data from disparate sources, PI System visualization and reporting tools provide a graphical, intuitive, and easy way to analyze and visualize data. This allows for high fidelity, real-time reporting without the risk of pulling reports from control systems.   • OSIsoft Event Frames
    Define batch processes and other repeatable events, see all associated attributes within those batches. Data from these specific events can be compared, analyzed, and included in reports for clear end to end comparisons and optimizations....

  • While there are systems available that can capture the start and end time for a specific type of event, few systems can capture many different types of events and combine the event information with the process data that engineers and knowledge workers need to perform analysis on their events easily. Very often, the event data and process data are stored in separate systems leaving end users with the painstaking task of having to combine different data sets together manually in order to perform their analyses.

     The PI System has a feature called event frames that capture critical event contexts for our customers.  The event frames feature permits customers to capture a name, start time, end time, and a series of related information (event attributes) that are useful for analysis within the PI System.

    Event frames help customers capture and find important process and business events and the related data. Instead of searching by time, the event frames feature enables users to easily search the PI System for the events they are trying to analyze or report on. Event frames also returns all the related process data automatically so that users don't need to query multiple systems for data and then merge together manually. Event frames capture the events and references the related process data automatically so that users can spend their time analyzing the data, not querying and manipulating the data.

  • OSIsoft Asset Framework
    OSIsoft Asset Framework allows users to define meta-data models for equipment and other assets as a basis for simple and complex analyses. This is most often used to define and build models that directly reflect the process flow between assets....

  • OSIsoft Asset Framework (AF) makes it easy for users who are unfamiliar with PI System tag nomenclature to access and use PI System data like a chart of accounts but for assets. Physical assets, like pieces of equipment, have attributes associated them that can vary from a simple value (fixed information like equipment ID number) to measured attributes (like pressure or temperature) to calculated values (like last hour’s average steam flow). Asset Framework can support millions of assets (elements), each with numerous attributes. Common attributes are:

    • Name plate information
    • Flow rate
    • Temperature
    • Density
    • Calculations
    • PI points
    • Data stored in external tables

    Each attribute can be assigned a specific unit of measure. PI Asset Framework can then automatically convert values between units of measure based on the International System of Units (SI) as well as user defined classes and units of measure.

    PI Asset Framework is the core to additional uses of data outside of traditional data historians. Asset analytics can be accomplished by configuring and scheduling calculations based on specific attributes, while analysis templates enable users to manage their analyses in a standardized and consistent manner.

    An interesting example of this in action is how Queensland Energy combines metadata like the material of the line, the length of the line, location and weather data to calculate the thermal capacity and obtain line ratings across Queensland.
