The Buckling Pin Disc (BPD) is a proactive solution to prevent transformers from explosion and consequential fire by depressurizing the transformer following a short cirucit.
When an electrical arc occurs within the transformer, a large volume of explosive gas is created during the first few milliseconds of the arc thereby quickly creating a hydraulic pressure condition that can rupture the tank and release the explosive gas to the atmosphere.
Depressurization is achieved using a Buckling Pin based Rupture Disc (BPD) that begins to react to the first transient pressure wave in as little as 5 milliseconds. The BPD has a proximity switch that can signal activation by sending a signal to the transformer control panel. The hot oil is captured in an oil collection tank while the explosive gas is safely cooled while exiting through a flame arrestor.
The FDS is non invasive and can be installed on new or existing oil filled transformers whether they are indoor or outdoor. It not only protects the main transformer tank but on load tap changers, oil filled bushing turrets, and oil filled cable boxes.
