HELLFIGHTER U Flammable Liquid Fire School 2019

    Texas A&M Brayton Fire Field

The new team of HELLFIGHTER U and PHOS-CHEK are proud to offer the latest in hands-on flammable liquids and gas fire training. Just some of the many reasons to attend this class considered the best of its kind in world include:

    • An Instructor Cadre composed of experienced subject matter experts known throughout the oil and petrochemical industry, as well as, major public fire agencies both nationally and internationally.

    • Classes center around strategies and tactics proven at some of the most challenging incidents on record. These case histories (many of which were extinguished with the help of Cadre members) help instill confidence in those who are seeing this material for the first time.

    • Foam Chemistry review from the perspective of what first responders need to know to do their job both during and after a response.

    • Strategic discussions focusing on the real ‘End Goal’ of incident response to prioritize activities and avoid the mistake of considering extinguishment as the end-goal of a fire response.

    • Methods of avoiding pitfalls associated with improper or untimely equipment deployment and demobilization will discussed for a variety of incident types.

    • Strategic water delivery requirements for the new millennium referred to as ‘BIG FLOW’ will be discussed from a responder’s needs.

Who should attend: Municipal Fire Service; First Responders; Public Safety Personnel; Industrial Firefighters; Safety Personnel; Fire Brigade Members; Private Fire Companies, ARFF firefighters.

  • SOLBERG FIRE-BRAKE™  Class A foam concentrate from Perimeter Solutions is a synthetic firefighting foam concentrate specially designed to be used for wildland, structural and other Class A fuel fires. FIRE-BRAKE foam concentrate has the ability to reduce the surface tension of water, which substantially increases water’s overal lwetting capability. This creates a faster penetration and greater fire control when attacking combustible Class A fuels. FIRE‑BRAKE foam concentrate can be proportioned at the rate of 0.1 - 1.0% in fresh, sea and brackish water.

FIRE-BRAKE foam concentrate is designed and applied to Class A fires including wood, paper, coal, rubber, wildland and structure fires. FIRE-BRAKE foam concentrate is compatible with conventional firefighting equipment such as non-air aspirating and air aspirating foam nozzles, Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS), rotary and fixed wing aircraft, low, medium and high expansion devices.

FIRE-BRAKE foam concentrate has been tested to and meets the performance requirements of the U.S. Forest Service, Qualified Products List, Specification 5100-307a (as amended) for the applications as determined during the product evaluation and shown on the QPL, and meets the requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1150—Standard on Foam Chemicals for Fires in Class A Fuels (current edition).

  • C8 to C6 Fluorochemistries Transition
Concerns have been expressed if firefighting foam developed with ≤C6 fluorinated products can be as effective as those developed with greater than C6 fluorochemistries....

  • Fluorosurfactants have been used in firefighting foams since the 1960’s. Manufacturers of firefighting foam have used the properties of fluorosurfactants for three main purposes: increase extinguishment speed, provide a thin film to suppress vapors and to add oleophobic (fuel shedding) properties to the foam. When fluorosurfactants were first introduced, the molecular composition would have a distribution of C4, C6, C8, C10, and even C12 fluorocarbons. Fast forward to today and the focus has been on C8 vs. C6 containing firefighting foam concentrates.

When evaluating a chemical, regulatory authorities such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) look at three main environmental factors; Persistence, Bioaccumulation, and Toxicity (PBT). Chemical persistence relates to how well the chemical composition breaks down in the environment, bioaccumulative chemicals are products that build up in living organisms, and toxic chemicals are poisonous and cause serious harm or even death. Fluorosurfactants that are C8 in fluorocarbon chain length are considered by the USEPA to be PBT, while short chain C6 versions are essentially only persistent.

Although firefighting fluorosurfactants have changed since the 2010/2015 USEPA PFOA Stewardship Program, the ability to develop high quality and performance foam has not. The same fire test standards/protocols that were employed before 2010 are still used today, resulting in a better utilization of raw material components such as surfactants, solvents, and polymers. The change from C8 to C6 provides today’s firefighting foam with lower environmental and toxicological impacts.

End-users of firefighting foam should be especially aware of foam concentrates containing PFOS. Solberg recommends you review your existing foam inventories to determine whether the foam on hand contains >C8 fluorosurfactants that according to the USEPA are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic to the environment.
