Description

Click here to register for a Utility University course.
Understanding the full lifecycle of the IEC 61850 system is the key to a successful deployment. The best way to understand each stage is to review practical uses cases and tools in the market today to work through real-life examples. This course will teach you how IEC 61850 IEDs capabilities and data models are formally specified using the configuration language and how a system is designed including defining the communication parameters, the information flow implemented with IEC 61850 GOOSE messages to implement the protection and control schemes and the reporting for the SCADA communication.  The final phases of the lifecycle are critical to ongoing success and will be demonstrated by setting up functional testing of the system and preparation of maintenance tests to be done in a live system.

The objective of this course is to understand the life cycle of an IEC 61850 system from specification to acceptance testing. Based on a practical use case and using real tools the course will illustrate how the different definitions in the standard are applied during the life cycle. The participants will learn how the latest developments of IEC 61850 support the specification of both products as well as projects. They will then learn how IEC 61850 IEDs capabilities and data models are formally specified using the configuration language and how a system is designed including defining the communication parameters, the information flow implemented with IEC 61850 GOOSE messages to implement the protection and control schemes and the reporting for the SCADA communication. Finally, based on a simulation of the design, the course will demonstrate how a functional testing of the configured system can be done.

Attendees will learn:

  • A quick overview on the scope and content of IEC 61850

  • Cost savings achieved by engineering efficiency

  • How to specify an IEC 61850 based products and systems

  • Product selection

  • Design of the system including the design of the communication network and communication parameters, the SCADA related information flow, the implementation of protection and control schemes including the configuration of the associated GOOSE and sampled value messages as well as the configuration of functional parameters

  • Functional testing of the system and preparation of maintenance tests to be done in a live system

Who should attend this course:

Substation control and protection engineers, Engineering management, Test engineers, System integrators, consultants, Software engineers interested in the power industry.

Prerequisite skills, knowledge, certifications: None
