S&C and Tantalus Strengthen Strategic Alliance
Companies Announce Strategic Alliance for Municipal and Cooperative Utilities, Launches TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Recloser Integration
RALEIGH, N.C. – February, 4th, 2019 - Tantalus Systems, a smart grid technology company which helps utilities make smarter decisions through the use of its market leading distributed computing platform, announced today an expanded scope to their strategic alliance with S&C Electric Company. In this expansion, Tantalus and S&C will serve as preferred suppliers to each other by working jointly to deliver integrated solutions to the Municipal and Cooperative utility segment. This enhanced strategic alliance will be launched with the first integration of S&C’s TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Reclosers onto an AMI network. The integrated solution is being deployed at Laclede Electric Cooperative, which utilizes Tantalus’ AMI network, TUNet®. The integration of these two solutions will help utilities improve grid reliability and grid optimization by mitigating their exposure and costs of sustained outages. By utilizing TUNet infrastructure as a dual use application to access information from the TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Recloser, utilities gain higher reliability, better remote visibility, and detailed system information.
S&C’s TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Recloser distinguishes between temporary and sustained outages on lateral lines, drastically improving reliability for customers. By delivering timely outage data from fleets of TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Reclosers to a utility over an existing AMI network, utilities will be able to quickly pinpoint the location of a fault even when multiple outages are reported, better understand the cause of an outage, and proactively take corrective actions to mitigate the risks of future outages.
The two companies are working alongside Laclede Electric Cooperative in Missouri to gather results and enhance the integrated solution. “Remote capabilities to disable the reclosing function and obtain data such as load and fault currents assists in the safe and efficient operation of our system” said Terry Rosenthal, Manager of Engineering at Laclede Electric Cooperative.
“Tantalus continues to serve as an important ally to S&C as we seek to expand the value we deliver to Municipal and Cooperative utility customers” said Mike Edmonds, Chief Commercial Officer at S&C Electric Company. “The TUNet system is differentiated in its ability to deliver granular interval meter data while also supporting mission critical applications, such as grid optimization and distribution automation. The TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Recloser is delivering tremendous economic benefits to utilities and we believe that the delivery of this enhanced fault and outage data from our device over Tantalus’ high-powered, fast and reliable TUNet network will further enhance the value and return on investment that our customers expect.”
“We welcome the opportunity to expand our existing alliance with S&C as we continue to prioritize grid optimization and distribution automation as integral components to our solution portfolio” said Peter Londa, President & CEO of Tantalus Systems. “By integrating S&C’s lateral protection solutions with Tantalus’ AMI system and providing public utilities with the ability to identify, visualize and locate faults, we can collectively eliminate sustained outages, improve line worker safety and vastly improve reliability. The combination of these benefits enhances customer service and will reduce operating expenses for utilities.”
TUNet enabled TripSaver II Cutout-Mounted Recloser product demonstrations will be available at the global 2019 DistribuTECH conference, February 5-7, 2019 in both the Tantalus booth #11042, and at TechAdvantage, March 10-13, 2019 in the Tantalus booth #263.
Tantalus provides TUNet – the Tantalus Utility Network – which is an award winning end-to-end communications platform utilizing IP-based networks including Fiber, WiMAX and cellular as well as 220 & 900 MHz wireless Radio Frequency. TUNet is designed and built for the Smart Grid and unites utility applications through distributed, Linux-based edge computing capability at every endpoint, thereby enhancing the value of data across all utility departments through integrated solutions such as AMI, outage management, power quality monitoring, load management, lighting controls and distribution automation that are cost-effective and practical to deploy throughout urban, suburban and rural service areas.
