  • BlackBoard™ is a Primate Technologies visualization product that performs the following tasks to enhance Situational Awareness (SA) and Operational Awareness (OA) for electric and gas utilities:

    • Digitization of physical mapboard and paper maps for electronic viewing;
    • Electronic viewing of circuits and grid conditions that are manually entered by operators and dispatchers and/or updated by SCADA and Smart Meters,
    • View of real-time conditions, state estimator states and values, simulations of conditions or potential conditions, and contingencies for predictive analysis – all combined with other SA and OA system data (weather, security, crew locations, etc.);
    • Manual system for operators to track and update grid conditions when SCADA systems fail;

    With BlackBoard, physical mapboards that are converted to video walls provide a multi-faceted (SCADA, weather, communication, crew location, etc.) view of the electric system on a large video surface or at an authorized users’ desktop, BlackBoard allows users to electronically view the a service territory in its entirety or in individual sections as shown on paper maps. This includes geographic or schematic maps of a service territory built from electronic maps that are already used and maintained by the utility or that may be built from scratch by Primate’s team or the utility’s team using BlackBoard tools.

    Notable features available with BlackBoard viewing are as follows:

    • Authorized users may add electronic pushpins to devices or locations on a representation of the grid to show current state or select a device and change its visual state.
    • Visual or text notes may be added to specify field crew location, temporary changes to field equipment, or any other situation that needs to be tracked by other users.
    • Devices and pushpins have timestamps with descriptive notes attached, and audit trails are retained that identify the user who added, modified or deleted the data.
    • Colors and styles may be associated with push pins to signify status (opened, closed, manually opened, manually closed, etc.), condition (under repair, being installed, operational, etc.) or quality (failing to reclose, etc.). These symbols allow users viewing the grid information to quickly know service area conditions.
    • Authorized users may quickly search for an area of the service territory to apply new pushpins or review, edit or remove existing pushpins and notes.
    • Logs and audit trails record the operators’ interaction with the electronic pins and provides a summary list of all outstanding conditions.
    • Grid conditions of manually entered elements are securely viewable outside the control room.

    Optionally, BlackBoard views may be connected to SCADA and Smart Meters to determine current states and values of the telemetered information with manually-entered symbols and notes, adding temporary information. This allows for the telemetered and non-telemetered information to be jointly viewed. Views by an authorized user may be reviewed and (subject to authorization) modified on any of the following hardware:

    • Desktop computers using a standard web browser;

    • Single or multiple, tiled LCD screens;

    • Front projector(s), including projectors blended to form one large overview display;
    • DLP rear projector cubes forming a small or very large video wall; and
    • Direct view LED modules forming a video wall.

    With BlackBoard, control-room personnel have a method to retain last-known state and values when SCADA or other primary data sources fail. Secondary sources for information may automatically be substituted when a primary data source fails. Should SCADA fail, operators and dispatchers may manually enter device states as noted by field crew, along with pins and notes allowing them to track grid and system conditions. BlackBoard provides this user interface that continues to work as a manual system during unplanned catastrophic events.

    Data Retrieval and Aggregation for Situational and Operational Awareness

    GridGuardian collects state changes and analog value changes (optionally, outside a deadband) and collects relevant tags, alarms, events, and program messages. Data may be telemetered for immediate operations or state-estimator values to fill gaps for non-telemetered results or contingency data for predictive analysis.

    The data collection capabilities of GridGuardian provide comprehensive storage of information for control room applications and systems. This aggregation assists in supporting operations and maintenance personnel, allowing for analysis of cross system data. Reports may be generated and overview displays created to show visual grid state and system conditions. GridGuardian may launch external programs, execute JavaScript code, and/or play sound files. GridGuardian executes as a standalone software product featuring an API to easily receive data from many different systems, creating a data repository with the intelligence to convert data into information supporting Situational and Operational Awareness displays (available with Primate Technologies’ BlackBoard product).

    System Health Monitoring

    GridGuardian is an independent and unprejudiced solution complementary to existing SCADA platforms that monitors SCADA systems (including the alarm monitoring applications)  and other IT solutions at an application level and automatically alerts power system operators and technical support of unusual occurrences.

    After investigating the August 14, 2003 blackout in the Northeastern United States, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) identified several issues as problems or potential problems. Issues identified were related to the failure of a computer system and insufficient awareness by operations of the computer system’s failure. NERC asked utilities to “establish an automated method to alert power system operators and technical support personnel when power system status indications are not current, or that alarms are not being received or annunciated." GridGuardian solves this problem.

    Intelligent Alarm Processing

    GridGuardian collects data from one or more systems. Authorized users define rules to automatically notify the appropriate utility staff of abnormalities, communicating via each individual’s uniquely preferred method. If these abnormalities persist, GridGuardian can escalate the severity of the potential problem and inform additional staff of the issue. GridGuardian may automatically initiate more serious notifications to supervisors and managers to assist operators in maintaining system stability and reliability.

    Appropriate operations and maintenance personnel are notified of system conditions, communication failures, and loss of service to customers or neighboring utilities. GridGuardian also notifies people if status points have not changed within a configurable interval or if alarms have not been received in a timely manner, indicative of other system health issues. Notifications may be communicated via emails, text or voice messages, telephones, audible annunciators and/or electronically to other systems.

  • Primate Replay Server
    Primate Technologies has developed an extension to the GridGuardian™ server and TileViewer™ client applications that records an audit trail of events and data, and then allows a visual data replay of these historical events....

  • Primate's BlackBoard™ and GridGuardian™ servers aggregate events and other data from different sources. The last-known-good values for these events and data items are cached within the server. TileViewer™, a BlackBoard client viewer application, displays last known good values in near real time. The Primate Replay Server allows an authorized user to go back in time – to a specific window, if desired -- to the historical events of data visually, regardless of the original source of the data.

    With Replay, study cases can be saved for training operators.  Alternatively, operators may choose to perform a post-event analysis and review, such as after a major storm. During shift changes, operators may also want to visually review important events from the previous shift. All events and other data are stored in such a way that it can easily be retrieved for later replay, including events from SCADA/EMS/DMS/OMS, pins, notes, tags, TileViewer drawing tool objects, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) data, and weather radar/lightning/alert notifications.

    Replay records constantly. There is no need to start and stop recording. When a configurable disk space quota is reached, older historical data is purged from the database, allowing space for the newest events and data. Saved study cases are separately stored and do not get purged.

    During a replay, the user has the ability to select the desired replay time interval and replay speed. The Primate replay application pushes the historical data to BlackBoard’s TileViewer client, to be viewed on the current display map. All the normal, view-only TileViewer display features are available during historical data replay (pan, zoom, find or search information, toggle layers, view description of pins and notes, etc.).

    Because the raw data is stored, the data may be replayed against any display, even a new display built after an incident. For example, if the customer has a geographic and a schematic display, the historical data can be replayed in any display. This could be used to give different views into the same historical timeline.

    The TileViewer user interface provides the ability to bookmark a specific point in time in the historical data. This allows the user to replay beginning at the defined bookmark.

    When TileViewer is in replay mode, it presents an orange border, and a replay timestamp at the top of the display helps clearly distinguish the replay window from a window receiving real-time updates.

    When replay is running, TileViewer will display the sequence of actions that have occurred between the replay begin timestamp and the replay end timestamp. Replay setting parameters can be adjusted to play back history at a faster or slower rate than events happened originally.
