 Press Releases

  • At their annual user conference, OpenForum™, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) unveiled their newest product offering: OSI Compass™, a groundbreaking new operations mobility platform that integrates seamlessly with OSI's advanced operations technology (OT) tools for distribution and/or transmission operations.

Incorporating the latest in web and mobile technology, OSI Compass enables utilities to efficiently and effectively assign work to field technicians, improving safety, communication, documentation, and productivity. Field crews can access real-time network, asset, and outage information using an intuitive interface on mobile and hand-held devices that includes highly configurable map displays, substation one-lines, and real-time tabular displays. They can then deliver real-time status updates and metric reporting from the field to control centers using a variety of handheld or truck-mount devices, including Android-, Apple-, or Microsoft-powered phones, tablets, or field notebooks. This new technology will transform field operations and provide a comprehensive end-to-end integrated solution for utilities, replacing the disjointed and non-native field solutions that may be in practice today.

"Any utility company looking to prepare their field crews for the next big outage event or improve operational efficiencies should be considering OSI Compass as an enabling technology," said Sally Jacquemin, senior director of OSI's Distribution & Smart Grid business unit. "It extends the power and scalability of our monarch™ platform to field crews and mutual-assistance crews, securely providing the necessary real-time network awareness and work order management to maintain and restore service as quickly, safely, and efficiently as possible."

  • Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been awarded a contract by UNS Energy, the parent company of Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and its sister company, UniSource Energy Services (UES), to supply a state-of-the-art Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) built on OSI's monarch™ operations technology (OT) platform. TEP serves more than 424,000 electrical customers in the Tucson metropolitan area and UES provides natural gas and electric service to more than 252,000 customers in northern and southern Arizona.

The new ADMS will also replace the utilities' legacy Outage Management System (OMS) with an integrated, enterprise OT solution that enables operational decisions based on information from various grid devices and automated meters. It provides a flexible and scalable platform to integrate with emerging technologies such as distributed energy resources, weather models, and automated devices for advanced management of the distribution grid.

In addition to the full Distribution SCADA functionality of the OSI monarch platform, this comprehensive ADMS implementation will feature the following: Distribution Network Operating Model, a full complement of Advanced Distribution Management Applications, Outage Management System, Switch Order Management, and the Distribution Operator Training Simulator.

"Our new ADMS from OSI will provide us intelligent situational awareness of the electric grid," said Erik Bakken, Vice President of System Operations and Environmental at TEP and UNS Energy. "It will enable us to actively operate and maintain the electric distribution system and manage increasing levels of distributed generation installations (renewables), energy storage, and real-time grid information more effectively."

"ADMS is a fundamental transformative strategy for the modernization of distribution grid operations," said Hormoz Kazemzadeh, Vice President of Distribution and Smart Grid at OSI. "We are excited to implement our ADMS at TEP, one of the leading utilities in reliability, to support the efficient operation of grid resources and integration of emerging grid technologies and applications."

Tucson Electric Power (www.tep.com) and UniSource Energy Services (www.uesaz.com) serve as local leaders in community service, volunteerism, and economic development efforts in the communities they serve. TEP, UES, and UNS Energy are among a family of utilities owned by Fortis, Canada's largest investor-owned gas and electric utility holding company.
