  • EPS covers the complete range of project processes, including system engineering and project management, up to final handover to the customer.

    Assisted by its many experienced engineers, who have a long history of projects executed successfully, ANDRITZ HYDRO provides the entire EPS equipment from a single source in order to guarantee that the customer receives a fully functional power plant system customized to his needs.

    The equipment range includes low-voltage, medium-voltage, and high-voltage equipment for indoor and outdoor applications; power and instrument transformers; HV substations; back-up diesel generation and battery systems; grounding and lightning protection; fire-fighting and alarm systems; lighting and small power systems; the complete cabling and interconnection system up to transmission line links, as well as ventilation and air conditioning for the power plant.

    All equipment will be integrated into the automation, control, and protection system of ANDRITZ HYDRO, including the interface management to other auxiliary systems.

    In addition, EPS provides engineered solutions of highest quality for special applications, such as pumped storage plants, by integrating starting frequency converters as well as AC excitation systems for adjustable speed plants.

    ANDRITZ HYDRO generators are characterized by their compact design, high efficiencies, and long lifetime thanks to the use of modern calculation methods and optimized manufacturing procedures and materials.

    Depending on the hydropower plant characteristics, the turbine used and the required speed, the following generators are available:

    • Vertical shaft generators
    • Motor-generators
    • PIT type generators

    Vertical shaft generators

    Vertical shaft generators are coupled to vertical shaft hydro turbines of any size with outputs up to 840 MVA. ANDRITZ HYDRO has leading experience with vertical generators for Francis, Kaplan and Pelton turbines, for the whole range of outputs and speeds. More than 1,800 large generators supplied by ANDRITZ HYDRO are installed or under construction worldwide in over 700 power plants with a total capacity exceeding 130 GW.

    Motor generators

    Motor-generators are used in pumped storage plants to generate electrical energy and to drive pump turbines. ANDRITZ HYDRO has supplied motor-generators for pumped storage applications up to 360 MVA with constant or variable speed and one or two directions of rotation, and also has experience with all unit configurations, for example fixed coupling to reversible pump turbines or to a turbine-plus-pump set. The unit can be started with static frequency converters (SFC), pony motor, back-to-back, or a turbine. ANDRITZ HYDRO has special experience in variable-speed motor-generators for optimum efficiency at variable heads and for maximum grid benefits.

    PIT type generators

    PIT type generators are used for smaller, low-head applications and are coupled via step-up gear to the horizontal turbine shaft. For low-head hydropower stations with lower ratings, pit applications are an economical solution, typically up to 17 MVA and with 500 to 900 rpm. PIT generators stand for robust design and cope reliably with the high runaway speeds required for hydropower plants.

  • ANDRITZ HYDRO has more than 175 years of accumulated experience in turbine design and has over 31,000 turbines - more than 430,000 MW - installed globally.

    A water turbine is a turbine which makes the hydropower available. The kinetic energy of the water is converted into rotational energy by means of the water turbine, which causes rotation of the turbine shaft. This rotation is used to drive a generator to produce electrical energy. To achieve optimum efficiency, the turbine must be adapted to the specific demands of the hydropower plant such as different heads and flow rates.

    ANDRITZ HYDRO provides a wide variety of different turbine types - from Pelton turbines for high head applications and large output over Francis turbines for the medium net head range and large output up to 800 MW per unit to Kaplan turbines for low head operation with small unit output. For very low head and low unit output ANDRITZ HYDRO offers also bulb turbines.

    ANDRITZ HYDRO is known for technology applications for special purpose such as pump turbines or tidal current turbines, generating power from water speeds.

    ANDRITZ HYDRO is famous for its very own invention – the HYDROMATRIX – for low head operations up to 19m that can be installed in existing dams and gate structures.
