  • The ability for electric grid operators to maintain command, control and communications in both natural and manmade disasters is critical. This need has been further heightened with the Presidential Directives from the White House issued over the last few years. These have been directed to electric power grid operators and other critical infrastructure industries to protect their operations.

    Barrett Communications have been designing and manufacturing High Frequency (HF) radio products for 40 years and their solutions can provide an infrastructure independent fallback solution to maintain voice, email, fax and data communications within minutes of an event.

    Barrett's SDR HF radio operates like the smart phones we are familiar with, and have pre-configured contact lists which can automatically select the best frequency to use therefore requiring minimal staff training to operate.

    In 2014, Bonneville Power Authority (BPA) installed a Barrett HF Fallback communications system. BPA's service territory is subject to a number of signicant natural risks including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, severe winter weather and flooding, other potential threats to the system have been identied, including sabotage,accidents and terrorism.

    BPA's existing voice and data administrative communications systems were highly dependent on connective infrastructure and line of sight radio communications. They were, therefore, subject to gaps in existing areas of coverage, and to potentially widespread degradation of the service during signicant disruptive events. Recognizing these gaps, BPA's Transmission Services Emergency Manager, Nelson King, obtained management approval to develop and implement an emergency HF radio communicationsystem. 

    HF radio is the one common operating platform that allows for instantaneous point to point and point to multipoint communications with no reliance on infrastructure. US Federal and State Governments have already allocated radio spectrum for this purpose, making HF radio a free to air communication system throughout the US with connection into all relevant agencies.

  • The Barrett 2020 system is ideal for the provision of full and secure email and data transfer within organisations with remote-sited operations with no existing communications infrastructure.

    The 2020 provides a simple automatic interface for speech, data transfer and email among all stations in the HF network with full connectivity to internet email via an HF gateway station. After the initial capital equipment cost, which is comparable or less than current satellite systems, there are no ongoing time charge costs for data transfer within the network.

    The Barrett 2020 has been designed specifically for simple installation and ease of use. For the system administrator, a variety of automatic linking options and a link scheduler, fully interoperable with FED STD ALE and CCIR Selective Calling protocols, are available to provide a comprehensive and automated networking solution.

    To the end user the 2020 system is transparent; emails are sent and received via the users own and familiar mail client software such as MS Outlook or any other common email program.

    On air link protection is provided through user configurable DES Data Encryption with enhanced link security, ensuring secure communications between like coded stations. 

    The Barrett 2020 email system uses the advanced Clover 2000 and 2500 modems, employing the latest Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques which are specifically designed for HF operation. Modulation formats vary from simple robust two phase to multi-level differential phase four level amplitude modulation modes which combined with sophisticated compression algorithms within the Barrett 2020 operating software produce compressed on-air data rates in excess of 14400 bps*.

    The 2023 HF modem is available as an internal fit option for the Barrett 2050 HF Transceiver or externally in a separate modem enclosure. The
    internal modem is an ideal option where base station space is limited or in manpack or mobile configuration.

    New Software Defined Core

    Advanced calling features
    The 2090 transceiver is fully interoperable with a number of advanced digital selective calling systems commonly used by many peacekeeping, and non-government organisations. The 2090 transceiver provides for multi-standard four and six digit Selective Call features including, telephone interconnect, SMS text, GPS tracking, status calling, point to point to multipoint Secure Call and remote transceiver disable capabilities.

    Detachable display
    The display, complete with a fully featured advanced handset remotes from the transceiver unit. This enables the operator to wear the display unit on their front webbing and have full operational access to the manpack without dismounting the manpack transceiver unit itself.

    Enhanced DSP noise reduction
    The new Digital Signal Processor (DSP) provides clear intelligible voice communications on analogue circuits through the digital removal of background noise and interference. The standard DSP noise reduction system provides outstanding voice quality by reducing radio frequency interference (RFI), and the effects of electrical interference by enhancing audio signals to provide easier listening.

    Digital Voice
    Barrett digital voice options provide the highest level of digital quality clear speech between similarly equipped transceiver equipment regardless of the prevailing HF conditions. 

    Secure Communications (optional)
    The 2090 can be fitted with a variety of scrambling and digital encryption options for voice and data security. Options include Barrett's unique Secure Call feature, an innovative narrow band voice scrambler providing secure Selcall initiated point to point or point to multipoint communications on both open or preencrypted voice channels, regardless of the base level network encryption employed enabling secure point to point or multipoint  communication within a secure network.

    Secure voice and data operation is further assured with a variety of internal and external encryption options for both voice and data communications, from 128 bit keyed FTT voice scramblers to DES 56 and export controlled AES 256 digital encryption standards, all interoperable with Barrett's patented frequency hopping providing instant access with no late entry synchronisation delay. 

    Integrated GPS interface
    Barrett's GPS interface supports connection into any NMEA0183 external GPS receiver antenna for tracking applications. This interface provides emergency call features and position information on all deployed equivalently equipped HF assets. 

    Automatic antenna tuner
    Whips and un-tuned wire antennas are simply deployed using the inbuilt, fully automatic antenna tuner. For temporary fixed station operations various lightweight broadband and tunable tactical antennas are available.

    Extended operation time
    The low current consumption of the 2090 transceiver enables it to operate in excess of 20 hours on one battery cartridge (assumes 90/10 RX/TX duty cycle). Spare quick change battery cartridges are small and lightweight and include an inbuilt charge management circuit allowing the cartridges to be charged whilst fitted and in operation or separately from any available DC source, including solar, hand crank or wind generator.

    Internal data modems - Clover 2500 or STANAG 5066 stack (optional)
    The 2090 can be fitted with either the field proven Clover 2500 or STANAG 5066 internal data modems supporting high speed secure data and email transmission, with effective data rates in excess of 14,400 bps. Clover data modems are supplied with our 2020 advanced “designed for HF operation” email and file transfer solution with full ALE control, voice call and typed text GUI proving short text messaging functions and “On
    Air” live chat. MIL STD data modem solutions are provided with Barrett's RC50 STANAG 5066 based communications suite providing for full ALE
    based automatic secure mail delivery. All Data Modems are available as internal or external fit according to deployment requirements.

    Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) (optional)
    The 2090 is available with full MIL-STD-188-141B 2G ALE (JITC certified) and FED-STD 1045 ALE. When selected, the Barrett 2090 offers full
    interoperability with all other military and commercial equipment complying with this standard plus enhanced telephone interconnectivity. Tactical Field Data Terminal (FDT) option provides the 2090 with the very latest 3G ALE STANAG 4538 with advanced capabilities for voice, messaging, GPS tracking and radio status for simple and reliable communication.

  • The Barrett 2060 is a fully automatic telephone interconnect, which enables high frequency radio network stations to become part of the international telephone network. HF stations can direct dial any telephone number on the international telephone network.
    Additionally stations can call up to 98 programmable pre-set telephone numbers stored in the 2060 telephone interconnect. Telephone subscribers on the international telephone network can dial into the 2060 interconnect and call any station on the HF network.
    The Barrett 2060 interconnect also supports MIL-STD 188-141B ALE allowing ALE networks to have fully automatic access to the telephone network. The Barrett 2060 interconnect provides full network management facilities including variable access levels for HF stations calling the telephone network, comprehensive call logging for charging purposes and remote supervision by a dial up computer link.
    Recordable voice messages allows system greetings and instructions to be in any language, stored in non-volatile Flash RAM. Learn function for non-standard call progress tones Should the selectable standard international telephone call progress tones not operate in certain countries, the 2060 can record, learn and store these non-standard call progress tones on site.
    Periodic beacons
    When not handling traffic, if enabled, periodic beacons are sent on all channels at regular intervals. This allows the HF users to evaluate the best channel to use with the 2060 base station. 
    Remote parameters                                                                                                                                                                                       Using a PC loaded with Barrett 2060 remote software, parameters,  access levels and call logging information can be downloaded via the telephone network. This allows the 2060's to be installed at remote locations and be controlled from a central point.
    Large log capacity
    Up to 4096 log entries of system activity can be stored in the 2060 before a download is required. 
    MIL-STD 188-141B, FED STD 1045 ALE
    ALE simplifies the operation of the system as the HF network user need only enter the 2060 address and a telephone number required and the telephone caller has only to enter the mobile number required. The ALE system establishes the link between the two.

    Call charging
    Call charging information is stored in the 2060 and can either be based on call duration or information provided by 12 to 16 kHz or 50 Hz metering pulses. (Note:- The Telco providing the line connected to the 2060 must be requested to provide these metering pulses). 

    DTMF or Decadic dialling
    To allow operation of the 2060 on older exchanges Decadic dialling as well as DTMF can be selected. 
    Access levels and barring for individual users
    Stations within the HF network can be allocated individual access levels in relation to the telephone network, i.e. local calls only, full ISD call access, specific number barring or complete barring.
    DSP noise reduction
    A DSP (digital signal processor) noise reduction system provides clearer reception from the HF network can be toggled on or off by the telephone caller.

    Manual / Automatic VOX
    Should telephone connection be of such poor quality that the automatic VOX becomes unstable, the telephone caller can switch to manual VOX on their telephone to change the 2060 from transmit to receive.

    2060 system parameters by voice annunciation
    The telephone caller can request the frequency of the currently selected channel in kHz on their telephone keypad. The keypad can also by used to will provide the software version, PA temperature, supply voltage during transmit and the percentage of billing storage used from the 2060 and its associated 2050.

    Emergency Selcalls
    While scanning, all types of emergency calls received will be annunciated both audibly and visually on the associated 2050 transceiver (if a front panel is fitted).
    98 stored telephone numbers
    98 pre-programmed telephone numbers stored in the 2060 can be accessed by HF manpacks, vehicles or base stations that only have Selcall and not the full dial Telcall option fitted.
