WORKSHOP 4: Patents: Being the Hammer and Not the Nail
- Room: Level 3 - Room 304C
- Session Number:WKSP4
Tuesday, February 28, 2017: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Building patent rights in your product is more important than ever. And from a purely legal standpoint, always patenting is the safest approach. But this patent-everything approach rarely makes good buisness sense. Using LED product hypotheticals as teaching points, this highly interactive course will show you how to develop ample patent protection in the US and internationally. And you will learn the smart way to do it, so that time and money are not wasted on patents that should never have been filed.
Second, we will discuss how to avoid getting hammered by the patents of others. The proliferation of patents over the past decade has necessitated the development of a new skill set for dealing with the currently existing global patent thicket. To do this, you will learn how to recongnize when problem patents exist in your space. Then, we will discuss how these patents can be; (i) navigated to avoid infringement if valid; (ii) identified and ignored where they are bogus; and (iii) killed if necessary using new procedures.
