The introduction of optical silicones over the past few years has provided exciting design and performance opportunities for Lighting Manufacturers and Designers. Optical silicone material and processing technology continues to advance and open up new applications and ways of manufacturing luminaires on the forefront of the market. Recent developments of optical silicone materials have led to innovations in the feel of the silicone resin, the optical performance and the processing. This paper will illustrate how these new materials have led to a silicone that feels like a plastic resin. They will also describe advances that allow for longer path lengths enabling silicones to function as flexible light pipes. Lastly it will describe how these same materials can be used as highly transmissive diffusers.
