Laser Light Sources For Specialty Illumination Applications Recent progress in the integration of laser pumped phosphors has enabled a new category of solid state light sources that deliver advanced illumination effects from novel form factors. In this presentation, we discuss the merits and challenges of laser light compared to other lighting technologies, such as LEDs, OLEDs, and legacy sources. We provide an update on the capabilities of laser light technology including progress in luminous flux, luminance, efficacy, and color quality. Additionally, we describe recently developed, innovative laser light modules that produce highly directional and precisely shaped spotlight illumination. We present additional examples of novel laser light sources including micro-luminaries, ultra-short throw modules, and waveguide delivered remote sources. These laser light sources have a myriad of applications in architectural, entertainment, outdoor, and automotive lighting. Lastly, we introduce dynamic laser light modules, and describe the time–variable illumination capabilities that these sources enable. We provide an outlook for the future of laser lighting based these dynamic sources, and their potential role in emerging lighting applications, such as smart lighting and internet of things (IoT).
