    SURVICE Metrology has provided precision measurements to support the installation of numerous new hydroelectric unit installations.  These installations often require working outdoors; exposed to the elements, sometimes at night to minimize differential thermal expansion of the parts being installed.

    • Our personnel have provided precision measurements for the installation of hydroelectric power generation units across the United States and Canada.
    SURVICE Metrology personnel are trained to efficiently and accurately measure generator components such as stators and rotors.
    We are also highly experienced at the measurement of turbine components:
    • checking shafts for verticality
    • verifying wicket gate locations
    • setting of the wicket gate opening mechanism
    We also specialize in the measurement of turbine blades, both in and out of the unit, providing a very useful comparison with CAD if required.
    • All SURVICE personnel are experienced at key bar installation.
    • SURVICE has developed a proprietary method for the keybar placement which greatly assists welders and allows for fast efficient alignment of the keybars.

    • This measurement technique requires only a digital camera, computer, scale bars and targets. When employed by our experts, the system is capable of very similar accuracy to the laser tracker.
    • The system can be employed for any measurement but is particularly useful for the final core measurement as it is much easier to ship to sites than a laser tracker.

    TASK: SURVICE Metrology is routinely tasked with providing 3D measurements of all embedded com-ponents in a vertical hydroelectric generator pit.  In a time span which is typically two shifts, our team collects a set of 3D point coordinates from which the circularity, concentricity, and verticality of crit-ical components is established.  Our report leads subsequent machining and repair processes which re-center and re-plumb the hydroelectric genera-tor and turbine.  To date, SURVICE Metrology has provided dozens of such inspections to the hydroelectric industry.

    EQUIPMENT: AICON DPA System and FARO Laser Tracker System

    BENEFIT: The laser system can be used to confirm through-hole patterns, frame ring dimensions, and sole plate elevations and keyway axes before work begins.  In a typical situation, the system can set stacking bars in place to within ±0.003” (±0.075mm) before welding begins.
