New vehicle technology presents ever changing challenges for today's rescuers. This presentation focuses on the fact that vehicles have changed and will continue to change, the various changes that have occurred, and the challenges and dangers these changes present for rescuers during extrication operations. Metallurgy, design, construction, new 2017 glass standards and safety system changes, and challenges with hybrids and lithium Ion battery-powered vehicle fires will also be discussed. Reevaluation of traditional methods, tactics, and equipment will be a recurrent theme throughout the program. Changes, advances, and limitations in current rescue tool technology will be covered. This program is based on the first-hand, ongoing relationship between the instructor and automotive engineers from major automakers. Visual aids and vehicle photos are all based on donated tough new vehicles used to prepare this program.
